Is Being Busy a Lie? How to Create Real Balance as a Working Mom
Jan 15, 2025
As a working mom, you’ve probably heard it all: “I’m so busy!” “I don’t have time for anything!” “There’s just not enough hours in the day!” But what if being busy was a lie? What if wearing it as a badge of honor, is not the right approach?
The constant hustle and the never-ending to-do lists? That’s not balance, that’s burnout in disguise.
1. Busy Doesn’t Equal Productive
Let’s get one thing straight: just because you’re busy doesn’t mean you’re being productive. The idea that being constantly occupied is a measure of your success is a dangerous myth. It’s not about how much you do—it’s about what you do and why you’re doing it. Are you filling your day with mindless tasks, or are you intentionally working on things that align with your goals and values?
If you’re spending your days checking off items without thinking critically about why they’re on your list in the first place, you’re just running in circles.
2. Multitasking Is a Trap
As a working mom, multitasking often feels like a survival tactic. But let’s be real—multitasking is just a shortcut to exhaustion. Studies have shown that multitasking actually reduces your productivity and increases stress. That’s because your brain is constantly switching between tasks, never fully focusing on one thing at a time.
Instead of trying to do everything at once, choose your focus. Narrow your attention to one task at a time, whether it's a work project, spending time with your kids, or taking care of yourself. This will create more intentional and fulfilling moments, rather than a blur of scattered energy.
3. Balance Isn’t About Doing More—It’s About Doing Less, but Doing It Better
Most working moms are so consumed by the idea that balance means dividing their time evenly between work, family, and self-care. But balance isn’t about doing more things—it’s about doing fewer things, but doing them well.
The key to real balance is choosing what truly matters and cutting out the unnecessary noise. You don’t need to do everything. You just need to do the right things that align with your core values. Prioritize your well-being, your relationships, and the work that brings you joy and fulfillment.
4. Let Go of the “Shoulds” and Define Your Own Balance
Another reason why “busy” is a lie? We’re constantly comparing ourselves to others. You might be feeling pressure to meet other people’s standards—whether it’s the picture-perfect mom on Instagram or the overachieving coworker who seems to be doing it all.
The truth is, you don’t need to live up to anyone else’s idea of success. Let go of the “shoulds” and define balance on your own terms. Your life is unique, and your version of balance will look different from anyone else’s—and that’s okay.
5. True Balance Is About Energy, Not Time
Let’s talk about the real secret to balance: it’s not about time management—it’s about energy management. You can’t add more hours to your day, but you can protect and replenish your energy. True balance comes when you prioritize activities that recharge you—whether that’s a moment of quiet in the morning, an afternoon workout, or a deep conversation with a friend.
By focusing on how to manage your energy throughout the day, you’ll find that you have more of it to give to the things that truly matter.
Being busy isn’t a measure of success—it’s a sign that you’re overwhelmed. It’s time to stop glorifying busy and start reclaiming your energy and balance.
Real balance as a working mom doesn’t mean doing more—it means doing less, but doing it with intention, focus, and clarity. When you stop chasing after the endless list of tasks and start prioritizing what truly matters, you’ll feel more aligned, energized, and confident.
